Visoko Valley Landscape Survey and Preservation Project
Currently a work in progress, this project aims to research through the historical sites, records and the last 50 years of archaeological excavations in the Bosnian valley of Visoko.
Visoko was once the center of the Bosnian Kingdom and its importance in the region dates back to the Neolithic, it features Illyrian and Roman settlements, Medieval fortresses and monastries. It was an area of great interest both under the Ottoman empire and during the Austro-Hungarian domination. Nowadays the history of this valley still unfolds its beauty and our purpose is to assemble as much information as possible to be published in one single research publication. This publication is meant finally to promote academic networks and touristic interest both in Bosnia and in Europe.
Cajangrad
"The name Čajangrad comes from the old Slovenian verb “Čajati”1, which means “to keep”, relating tothe function of the city in this period – the keeping and safeguarding of the local resident population. Itis assumed that this fortress had the function of guarding an important pathway between the MedievalBosnian royal towns / cities of Visoki and Bobovac.1 “Čajati” alternative interpretations of this word exist, mainly focussing on the etymological root of the word. In themodern Slovenian and Russian languages, “Čajati” can be interpreted to mean “waiting”, “hoping” and in this senseof the word, the city could be described as a post between two other cities, one that waits on travellers or news.4The Bosnian Čajangrad, visually connects the locations of the royal cities of Visoki (Visoko), Bobovac(Vares) and Kozigrad (Fojnica), for the related activity of lighting flame torches at these locations as asign of signalling, (alert, warning of danger, important visits etc.)That it is most probably a royal city is witnessed at two locations on the south side, that are even to thisday called Kraljev Do (The King's Way) and Kraljevo Guvno (Unknown direct translation), amongst theremaining literature about Čajangrad has been reported in writings by H. Kresevljakovic “Stari bosanskigradovi”, (“Old Bosnian cities”), Sarajevo 1953. and M. Vego “Naselja bosanske srednjevjekovnedrzave”, (“Towns of the Bosnian medieval country), Sarajevo 1957."
